V is for Value
(Please forgive me, the post is a day late, the past two days were a whirlpool of work and other things to do that I literary collapsed into bed at 9:30pm yesterday, a rare occasion unless I’m dead tired or sick, so I’m catching up with posts today).
If you read Dr. Seuss’ books, you’ll realize that very little in them is actually for kids. And the stuff that we think is childish is the one we have to pay close attention to. As adults, we lose a sense of “little things” sometimes, we try to keep a “bird’s eye view” and “general perspective” losing those precious “in the moment” details that come from simple or, as we sometimes think, insignificant happenings.
The value of a moment (or a minute, a day) is not in the length, it’s in the emotions, connections, with others and with our inner self, that these moments provide. How often do we stop and marvel at a beautiful butterfly that just landed on a flower as we were passing by (to whatever destination, rushed as always, eager to get to that thing we are running to, work, chore, and then hop on the next one on a never ending list of things to do, guilty of it myself)? How often do we stop and “smell the roses” where that butterfly just landed? Not often enough. But if we did, stopped and marvel both creations for a moment, we may have discovered some simple joy that we haven’t felt in ages, maybe we would have remembered that childhood friend we used to run around with, and that we haven’t reached out to them in a long while and know nothing how their life is going even though once they were the most important people in the world. And it’s not even that both of your paths are gone in different directions, though that does happen too, but it’s more that we are just too busy creating “grand moments” of life success and don’t leave enough time to continue weaving our “personal story”.
As these moments come into your life, try to stop and create a memory as it’s happening, dive into a simple pleasure of a “still minute” when you let your imagination and all your senses unfold taking you on a journey of your inner self, connecting you with nature and a million other inner selves that surround you on a daily basis. Stop to smell those roses, hold your breath and watch the butterfly, read Dr. Seuss books too, not to your children, to yourself…
